Summer Streets kicks off Saturdays from August 6 to August 20, 2011
Summer Streets returns! This fun event, that last three consecutive Saturdays (August 6, 13, and 20) shuts down Park Avenue from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm and opens the area up for pedestrians, cyclists, and play.
Last year’s Summer Streets was a lot of fun. Wake up early in the morning, and you can take advantage of tons of free events hosted by various sponsors. From free work out and dance sessions, to bike safety and other programs offered to the general public and their family.
Sponsors also have lots of discounted offers, such as Delivery.com, a leading destination for local online ordering since 2004, who is offering free $5 gift cards to anyone who stops by their booth. They are also raffling off bicycles, one per each Saturday in the Summer Streets.
This year, the 2011 route connects the Brooklyn Bridge with Central Park, with recommended spurs along low-traffic streets to the Hudson River Greenway, Harlem and Governors Island, allowing participants to plan a route as long or short as they wish. A full view of the 2011 route is here.
My family and I enjoyed it most on the earlier hours, and when you have the kiddos we recommend it as well. The weather is cooler, the event less crowded, and you don’t miss out on any of the fun!
