The Pink Tea Cup brings high-end soul food to West Village
I love soul food and the way in which those who prepare it do so for the love of sharing with others. This comfort food for the soul is meant to bring together families, stories, generations of recipes and flavors that make us forget our troubles and embraces us in the love of home.
I didn’t grow up eating comfort food as most Americans from Southern states did, we Latinos have our own version of what that is, but I sure have enjoyed tasting it in my travels and in many restaurants here in the NYC.
From as far as New Orleans to as close as Harlem, soul food has been a culinary adventure that we’ve enjoyed discovering. The different versions from kitchen to kitchen still stay true to the basic that are the dishes which make it so popular.
It’s a never ending quest, and we set out recently to a new locale, at least for us, located in the West Village (soon to open in Harlem), The Pink Tea Cup. Now, it’s a shame we’ve just discovered this eatery, which has been around for 56 and is now under new ownership and in a new location. I can’t compare what it was to what it is, and there are some opinions on that. But I did like the food, though I thought some of their dishes were a bit pricey for what they were.
For example, I really enjoyed their fried chicken. It was juicy, well seasoned, the perfect amount of crunchiness and flavorful inside and out. But $23 for fried chicken just seemed excessive to me and sadly, I haven’t gotten over it, though I will admit, I enjoyed their food and the atmosphere.
My husband ordered the meat loaf which was also made to perfection, and my absolute, “OMG these are so good!” dish were the corn fritters, which tasted very close to the beignets I had in New Orleans, but with corn. I would’ve eaten tons more of those if I could.
In all fairness, it’s become harder and harder to find reasonably priced soul food in NYC, but it’s also just as hard to find really good soul food as well, and certainly not in the West Village. So the area should definitely consider this eatery a gift, and if you have it to splurge, this isn’t a bad choice. Their brunch menu, which I haven’t tried, has great selections and ranges between $12-$15, average for NYC.
I would also suggest complimenting your meal with one of their signatures drinks. I tried a pink mojito and enjoyed it. It wasn’t too sweet and was definitely pretty!
And this I have to elaborate more on, the atmosphere. We went on a weekday, early dinner. It was rainy out and we sat in the front, near the open windows. The vintage furniture and soft lighting, the pink splashed throughout, the tin ceilings, and the nice staff.
Overall, it was a really positive experience at The Pink Tea Cup and I would take visiting friends and family here in the future…as long as we all agreed to split the tab.
