Pretty color fun-fun happy at Rainbow City

I know. The title seems a bit silly and sounds a tad childish, but truth is that the feeling you get the minute you step into this new sculpture garden being displayed under the High Line – with it’s cheerful color and caricature inflatables – is nothing less than pure joy.

Brought to us by FriendswithYouwith Miami-based artists Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III – and AOL, the installation is in place to commemorate the opening of the 2nd part of the High Line Overlook and is located at the entrance of 10th Avenue and 30th Street.

Next to the kid- and adult-friendly exhibit, is The Lot on Tap operated by Colicchio & Sons which will offer a rotating selection from local food trucks, a variety of family activities, and drinks from the bar. This summer-only gathering spot seats about 350 and is affordable with its $3.00 to $2.00 beer and other beverage choices (credit cards accepted).

The vibe is trendy NYC, but still relaxed, friendly and fun. My husband and kids couldn’t wait to break it in and went in the middle of the afternoon on a week day. I joined them again on a Sunday afternoon, and have to say that if possible to go on weekdays, then your kids will not have to endure lines or limits on time to play in the bounce figures available. Speaking of bounce houses, an all-favorite was the Onion House, because not only were the kids allowed to be kids, but so were the adults. It’s the one place where you can join in with your kids, or grown-up friends, in the bouncing, falling, and fun! (see video below)

There is no admission fee to enjoy the exhibit, and even in the middle of a beautiful weekend day it never felt terribly over-crowded. My boys were allowed to touch, bounce, run, and play freely. We got to enjoy our drinks in the beer garden while listening to music and afterwards, further relaxed with a leisurely walk across the mile-long High Line park.

With the new extension, the High Line now connects the neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen, and extends from Gansevoort Street to West 30th Street. This historical landscape is one of our favorite places and a jewel of the city.  A must see when visiting New York.

Rainbow City runs till July 5, 2011. You can read more on Rainbow City and AOL, as well as find out about exhibit hours here.
