The Tribeca Film Festival features The Loving Story
In 2009 my husband and I were introduced to Loving Day, an annual event that celebrates interracial marriage and helps to remind us of the very important criminal case that stood for love, fought against racism in this country, and changed history forever.
The Loving Day celebrations were especially moving to my Irish/Scottish husband and myself, of Puerto Rican/Dominican descent, because for the first time ever we were able to really “feel” the large numbers of interracial couples while we gathered with others under one roof, but it also served as a reminder that this freedom for us to love each other, one that was illegal in 22 of the United States, was one fought by many, among them The Lovings, no more than 44 years ago, only 6 years before I was born!

My husband and I. 44 years ago it was illegal in 22 states in this country for us to love each other and marry.
The Loving Story, a racially-charged criminal trial and heart-rending love story is now being featured in an HBO Documentary. The story of Mildred and Richard Loving, a black woman married to a white man in Jim Crow Virginia is one that should not be missed and that I hope you will share with your children and family as well. After experiencing being thrown into rat-infested jails and exiled from their hometown for 25 years, the Lovings fought back and changed history.
A Civil Rights story with modern day implications to the current marriage equality struggle, The Loving Story includes a large amount of authentic footage, photographs and interviews from the period that lets the subjects tell their own stories in a narrative way. Never-before-seen footage and photographs of this very private couple reveal who the Lovings really were and what it was actually like to marry as a mixed-race couple in the Jim Crow South.
The Loving Story, directed by Nancy Buirski, will premiere in NYC at the Tribeca Film Festival on 4/21. There are 4 screening dates set, and one that could be particularly friendly to families is the Monday 4/25 screening at 3pm, due to Spring Break.

I would definitely love to watch it with my family. Hope my young adult can watch it too. It’s a great way to teach them on respecting the different races.
