Jazz for Young People at Lincoln Center
Looking for something wonderful to do with your family, while giving them a unique cultural experience? Do like us, and check out the Jazz at Lincoln Center family concert series, Jazz for Young People, with two concerts left in the series.
I recently attended “What is Jazz?” presented by the legendary Wynton Marsalis, who along with the Jazz at Lincoln Center at Orchestra, gave a demonstration via performances and story telling of the true meaning of jazz.
Marsalis and the orchestra’s passion for the music was contagious, not just for seasoned jazz lovers, but for younger ones as well. Within minutes little ones, welcomed by Mr. Marsalis to do so, filled the stage. They were in awe of the instruments as they belted melodic tunes. Some danced, others just stared, taking it all in.
My teen sat next to me, quietly listening and holding on to Mr. Marsalis’ every word. As an alto saxophone player in his school’s band, he was captivated by the beauty of a professional band during a live performance.
This is a wonderful way for many parents to introduce their kids to the beauty and history of jazz.
The Family Concerts are on Saturdays, 1pm and 3pm and take place in the Rose Theater. Tickets prices are $12, $20, and $28. There are two remaining concerts in the series:
Who is Louis Armstrong? – January 29, 1pm & 3pm
Louis Armstrong was the first genius of jazz and the pioneer who brought jazz to a wider poplar audience. Join trumpeter Sean Jones and guests in this family concert illuminating Satchmo’s brilliance and irrepressible charm and wit.
What is the Big Band Era? – March 26, 1pm & 3pm
Even 75 years after the big band era, most will agree that this was the period when jazz reached its peak. Ted Nash leads the JLCO in a program sampling all the major big bands—Ellington, Basie, Goodman—and showing what made them swing so hard.
Included with your Jazz for Young People concert ticket/subscription purchase is a one-year subscription to Time Out New York Kids.
In addition to the concert series families are welcomed to come early for pre-concert activities. Arrive at 12:15PM and 2:15PM for a host of musical activities for all ages. Young children are will learn about the blues and make their own instruments in the Atrium. Instrumentalists ages 8 and up are invited to bring their instrument (acoustic only) for an exploration of the New Orleans groove in the Nesuhi Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame.
