Stars Shine Bright at A Little Night Music on Broadway
Last night I went to see the first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s and Hugh Wheeler’s Tony Award–winning masterpiece A Little Night Music, directed by Tony Award-winner Trevor Nunn. I love a lot of things about this production: the musical scores, the story line. But what is so fabulous about theater is that no matter how many times you’ve seen a show, or what you may have heard about it from others, a different cast can completely transport you and give you an experience that you may not have had before.
Based on Ingmar Bergman’s film, Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is a witty and urbane musical set in waltz time. The action takes place in a weekend country house in turn-of-the-century Sweden, where surprising liaisons, long-simmering passions and a taste of love’s endless possibilities are all brought to light.
I had the fortune of experiencing A Little Night Music during the performances of two awe-inspiring actresses. Tony, Golden Globe- and Grammy Award–winner Bernadette Peters and Tony, Drama Desk- and Emmy–winner Elaine Stritch. Watching their powerful, emotional performances had me laughing, crying, and completely moved.
My husband went with me, and we both agreed that the talent on that stage was bountiful. Even beyond Ms. Peters and Ms. Stritch. Alexander Hanson and Aaron Lazar brought the male prowess and sensibilities to the stage, while Leigh Ann Larkin’s voice and stage presence was powerful, even in her supporting role.
We enjoyed every second. I have a serious crush on Bernadette Peter’s acting and voice. My eyes teared up at the simple sight of her, she is so amazing to me…ah, and Elaine Stritch, words really cannot describe the wealth of talent this woman has.
By the time intermission came about, I was completely star-struck, giddy as a school girl…then I saw Holly Hunter, another strong actress I love, standing right next to me as Michael Kors walked by!
But all the silliness of celebrity drooling aside, the show is truly a gem, one I hope that you get to also come out and enjoy soon. NYCityMama.com readers can purchase tickets at a discount. This post made me ACHE to get to NY to see this! *sigh* if only…
Aw! I hope you can make it here soon April!
Sondheim is the premiere creative theater genius of our time and I adore his work. I have not had the good fortune to see this yet but both Ms. Peters and Ms Stritch are beyond superb in anything they do. My husband and I saw Ms. Stritch at the Carlyle Hotel and as I knew she would — she just blew me away <>. Thanks for posting Carol!
You’re welcome Barbara! I hope you both can go see them in this production…truly magical.
I love Bernadette Peters…I saw her years ago in Annie Get Your Gun & fell in love with her! I think I will have to check this out!
Thanks. Just booked my tix….so excited. I only wish it was Angela and Bernadette….
Oh my gosh…wouldn’t that be something! Enjoy the show Kage!
Wow looks like a great night. Its been awhile since I saw a show maybe I should make time before the long winter months.
The Little Hotel in Lund is a nice hotel. Can really recommend it.
