Every once in awhile it’s nice to get out of the city and do something fun. My family and I get out often, but we rarely do it without the kids.

But this past weekend was different. I accepted an invitation from Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City and took my husband along with me. I am not much of a gambler, I never really have faith I will win much at the slot machines, or know how to play cards, but it didn’t matter. In researching Tropicana, I had a feeling that I would have plenty to do.

It was a 2-hour drive from the city. We left the kids with the sitter and didn’t look back. Blasting the radio to any song we wanted, while sipping on some coffee, we were excited to be alone for two days.

We arrived into Atlantic City around 3pm. The sun was bright, and there was a strong wind blowing. I was nervous that maybe we would get lost among the many people entering the hotel at the same time, that maybe the service would falter amidst all the traffic. But that wasn’t the case. The valet tended to us right away, someone immediately approached us to carry our bags, and when we had a bit of confusion over the status of our room, the front desk manager came out right away to tend to our needs.

Our room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable, and we had a view of the beach, which though not a direct view, was good enough to get us excited even more.

We started our day by walking East on the boardwalk along the beach. The wind would blow sand right onto us, on our clothes, and hair, but no one cared. Families with children, couples holding hands, residents just hanging out; everyone seemed to be enjoying the weather and all the fun to be had there. I could see how much Atlantic City had changed since my last visit there, almost 10 years ago. But the Atlantic City Boardwalk has a rich history and is a huge source of pride for it’s community.  Visitors can find out more by downloading the Boardwalk Tour and taking the tour guide with them as they stroll down the boardwalk.

We stopped by some new shops, and then some shops that though new in their shop, were not at all new to the community. Companies such as the Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy. Fralinger’s has been a part of the community since 1880 and has a rich history as a growing and contributing member of Atlantic City, and their candy assortments, whether it be salt water taffy or fudge, are worth the trip (though you can order online as well).

We walked past the Convention Center, into The Pier Shops, and into the very fun, very kid-friendly Steel Pier Amusement Park.

Once back in our hotel, I loved the absolute silence in our room. For all the fun and activity going on downstairs, none of that was felt in the bliss of our space upstairs, and it was awesome.

Our dinner reservations were for Il Verdi. I wasn’t sure what to expect. You never know what you are going to get from an in-house restaurant at a large resort. Suffice to say here that both my husband and I are still talking about our experience there. Truly, truly amazing. For a full detail on our dining experience, please visit my Il Verdi review under the Good Eats section.

After an amazing dinner, my husband and I decided to take a chance at the slot machines. Like i said, I am not much of a gambler, and really have no idea how to play cards, but slots I can do. We took $20 and went for it.  We walked away $20 richer and couldn’t have been happier!

The most fun though for me was visiting The Quarter. Here is where you will find an even larger selection of restaurants, bars, dance clubs, shops, comedy clubs, and even an IMAX theater. Ah, yes…this was exactly what a girl like me wanted! We went into shops and, well, shopped. We had a few drinks, and people watched. I kicked myself for not having made an appointment at the spa (I needed more time!), and we bought tickets to watch Iron Man 2 in IMAX. The movie was GREAT, except for the fact that a fire alarm interrupted the film and caused us to miss the ending. But, they graciously refunded our money, and I get another chance to watch Robert Downey, Jr. larger than life.

That one night was so much fun for us! Had we had more time, we still would’ve had tons to do.

I thought it was great that Tropicana offers residents a discount to come in an enjoy the fun found in their facilities. They also have offer a Diamond Club program for visitors who are loyal players and really earn the VIP treatment. They have ongoing events and promotions for visitors, whether it be Ladies Night specials or Discount Deals, they make it easier for visitors to come in and experience a night or two away.

I am not sure if this would be the kind of fun place I would bring my kids to right away, but I certainly could if I wanted to. There were plenty of families with little kids there, and as I mentioned, the boardwalk offers tons to do as well. Plus they have a nice size pool (as well as a fitness center), if you wanted to go for a swim, not on the beach.

Before we left, we had a nice, relaxing brunch at the Seaside Cafe, and took another stroll along the boardwalk before heading home. On an early Sunday, the only sounds you hear are that of the seagulls and waves coming ashore. The boardwalk is less crowded, and it’s easier to get lost in your thoughts as you walk on the miles of sand.

It was really a great place to visit. We relaxed and had fun. It was easy to do both, though one night was certainly not enough to enjoy all they had to offer. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend a visit, especially for a fun weekend with friends or a significant other.
