There are many things that I love about New York City, the vast selection of theater productions being one of them. And it’s not only for grown ups either. More often then not a new show comes around that is brought to life with kids in mind, but in the most magical and creative way possible. My kids and I had a chance to live just such an experience when we saw John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean.
I went with all my kids (3, 4, and 12) on the 12:00 Saturday show.
Currently running in the awesome New World Stages, located at 340 West 50th St, between 8th and 9th avenue. The New World stages is a new facility located where the former Madison Square Garden used to be and the World Wide Plaza, close to many midtown hotels and where you can find eateries such as Mother Burger and Blockhead Burritos. The venue is currently hosting a few of my favorite adult performances such as Naked Boys Singing, Avenue Q, and another kid favorite, The Gazillion Bubble Show. It’s an awesome venue, with two bars, a large lounge, nice, large bathrooms, coat check, and five stages.
We arrived into the stage area where the performance of ImaginOcean are taking place. A dark theater setting, with thin chairs, both tall and average in height, nothing too fancy, which meant all the attention was on the stage itself.
My boys, not really knowing what to expect, quietly sat in their assigned seats and waited.
And from the moment the performace started till it ended they were glued to their seat, clapping, and yelling responses to the characters on stage. The characters, Tank, Bubbles, and Dorsel are fish and best friends. The story takes us through an underwater adventure in a black-lit, neon world. My boys were captivated right away, as was I, having never seen anything like it before. Musical numbers and a few challenges along their journey brought in the audience as we helped the friends through their journey till the end.
A truly colorful experience, really magical to the senses, I thought it was fantastic. The fact that my rambunctious boys sat through the 50 minute show (with no intermission), not once trying to get up, their complete focus and attention on stage really says it all. Tony Award nominee John Tartaglia has been wonderful in all I have seen him do. In my home he is best known for his role in Disney’s Johnny and The Sprites, but on stage I have enjoyed seeing his performances in Avenue Q, Beauty and The Beast, and one I did miss him in, Shrek The Musical.
I highly recommend taking the entire family to a performance of ImaginOcean, especially the little ones. Because if my boys loved it (and are asking to go back again), chances are your kids will love it too!
