Peter and The Wolf at The New Victory Theater

This morning we got up, with a tall to do list.  Tons of exciting things going on as the holidays approach.  We started off with a visit to Rockefeller Center for some locomotive fun, and after a bit, my 4 year old and I made our way to one of my favorite children and family friendly theaters, the New Victory Theater.  I have written about the New Victory before, but had never taken my 4 year old to experience what I knew to be the fabulous things about it.

Today we were heading over to see a performance of Peter and The Wolf, featuring British Stage and screen star Brian Blessed.  The performance will run in The New Victory Theater from November 13 through November 29, 2009. Mr. Blessed stars as the Narrator, and is amazing.  He immediately captures the audience, young and old, with his powerful voice and ability to disappear into the scenes.

The Musical Director of Peter and the Wolf is Keith Levenson, whose Broadway credits include Annie, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, Big River, Annie Warbucks, Chess and Dreamgirls. We loved that the orchestra was right there, visible to all.  My son was fascinated by all the instruments, and though we didn’t do so, I noticed some children approach members of the orchestra and ask them questions. They were all very approachable and friendly.

It was my son’s very first Broadway theater show. At first he was confused as to why there was no speaking, except for the narrative (it’s a dance and musical performance), but after a few minutes he “got it” and was completely enthralled. So much so that during intermission, we got a few snacks and since one is allowed to eat in the theater area we sat outside the grand room to do so.

As the lights flickered and the volume of the music rose, indicating that the show was about to proceed, my son became agitated, not wanting us return to our seats late and risk missing the continuation of the show.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I love the New Victory Theater for the selection of works they offer, the amazing talent and art, and the way I feel comfortable there with my little ones.  But most of all, I really love that I can continue to enjoy the theater, with my children, without feeling like they are being “stupified”, and without me feeling like I have had to relinquish sophisticated, quality, beautiful art and performances just because I have children.

If you love the theater, and it is something that you would like to expose your children to, whether you live here or are visiting, than the New Victory Theater is a perfect choice.  My son had a wonderful time.  I didn’t take a lot of pictures, but I made sure to capture the look on his face as we exited the theater and he excitedly recounted his favorite parts. Priceless.

My favorite theater as well. They are very kid friendly! We saw Dan Zanes perform twice, his favorite musician as a child. I haven’t been there in awhile but definitely will. They know how to entertain and educate at the same time.
