Experiencing Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, NY
One of the best things, if not THE best thing about New York City is the art scene. I love it. No place in the United States can compare to it. Whether it be film, theater, dance, music, or fine arts, New York is the place to get it, as much as you can, as often as you want. And if you know when to look and where, you will find that it is accessible too, not just for the well-off.
Art can be found anywhere and everywhere in New York City. Many times in the most unsuspecting places by the most unexpected people. Freedom of artistic expression is what has brought people here for many, many years. It’s what makes New York City tick and for many New Yorkers, it is a favorite pass time.
Recently, on a rainy night, I ventured out to enjoy a show at the Lincoln Center Theater. The Lincoln Center for Performing Arts has undergone some serious renovation, and there are still areas along Columbus Avenue and Broadway, as well as 65th st. where you will see closed up side walks and boarded up walkways.
The most impressive change thus far has been that of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, where the current New York Film Festival is taking place. This beautiful building, made up of mostly glass and complimented by the soft lighting is the home of the Alice Tully Hall and Starr Theater, where many of the fabulous films being showcased this season are seen, but where you can catch many other performances year round.

Any time I visit the Lincoln Center area I feel that same romantic feeling so accurately portrayed in the film Moonstruck. It just inspires creativity with its beauty. From the Ballet Theater to the Chamber Music Hall, the Lincoln Center Theater and others, the choices seem endless. And if you check out the sites for the New York Philharmonic , The New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, and The Metropolitan Opera, just to name a few, you will not only find family friendly programming, but also discounts and savings, such as “Rush Ticket” options for specific events. As a matter of fact, the Film Festival offers Rush Tickets on a first come, first serve basis for just $10.00!

But even if you just wanted to walk through, take in the site, maybe grab a drink or coffee and sit outside on the Center’s grounds, even that would be an amazing adventure. I like going and watching performance goers, enter and exit the theaters, their expression of anticipation or sheer joy as they prepare to see, or come from seeing their favorite show. Some looking so elegant and dapper, others just happy to be there…a scene so indicative of the diversity of those who love and enjoy the arts as much as I do. And on this rainy night, as I made my way back home from watching the fabulous show (of which I will write a review in just a couple of days–so stay tuned!), my heart was filled with joy and I couldn’t have been more in love with my city than I was at that very moment. That is the magic of experiencing Lincoln Center.

Visit the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary, from now until May 2010. For more information, visit their site here.

Great review & pics. Love the rainy ones. I know not everyone likes rain here in the city but I think it adds to the magic of our beautiful town!
