Apple Picking at Pennings Orchard, Warwick, NY

Last weekend the family and I wanted to take advantage of a beautiful just-beginning-of-Fall Sunday, so we headed about an hour North of New York City to go apple picking.

Normally we would wait till much later, but this year I think I actually am a bit more organized.  To where when I go to the orchard, there are still actually apples on the tree!  It was a nice drive past Bear Mountain and Tuxedo, NY. The winding roads were lined with trees lowly showing Fall colors of red, orange, and yellow. We arrived to Warwick, NY around mid-afternoon and enter Pennings Orchard shortly after.

They currently have two apples for picking: Macintosh and Ginger Gold.  Macintosh being great for apple pies, both combined even better. They provided us with a mesh bag that holds about 22lbs of apples (about 4 apple pies) and cost $25.oo each. We headed for the Macintosh apples first.  The trees were bursting with them.  The boys started picking (and eating) right away. It was fun watching them get so excited with each apple they saw at their reach.

We then moved towards the Ginger Golds. These apples are HUGE!  And so much sweeter than the Macs.  We filled our bag quickly, and started making our way out of the orchard part and towards the market.

The market is cute. A lot of fresh baked goods and fruits and vegetables.  I loved that they had all sorts of preserves, from all sort of fruits, directly from the farm for sell. And I couldn’t resist getting some of the apple cider donuts from their on site bakery. They smelled so good and tasted so fresh.  The prices weren’t bad either, which always makes it such a pleasure to buy organic and from a local farm.

The boys enjoyed the play area located right outside, as well as the petting zoo. I didn’t notice it coming in, but the farm’s market area is located right across the street from a big shopping center, which made the market area quite busy.

Everyone was really nice, and the everything was really fresh, delicious, and well priced. The apples were delicious, and we enjoyed our first apple pie only a couple of days later.

We went there Sun, had a great time and it was lots of fun.

ONE thing happened and it continues to nag me so much I think i need to call them

when we were leaving they politely asked us to open our car trunk?? they were polite, but i found it strange, so strange I was speechless. I complied and got a friendly wave.

I think I will look for another farm next time

    Hi Omar,

Yes. They do ask this, and I happily complied and this is why: while my husband and i were picking apples, we witnessed a couple filling up a shopping bag (not the one that you purchase upon entering the farm) with apples. The little boy that was there asked them to please use the red bags the farm gives (as having this means you paid for the apples you picked), they argued with him and moved on. Another couple filled up their stroller with apples and covered them with blankets.

It was sad to witness as I know that these farms struggle to stay afloat and in business. And this is how they protect themselves. Again, I happily complied because I felt so bad that others were stealing from them!

I do encourage you to try other farms (we have a list of other farms we are trying as well and will share with you)…and please let us know what you found and how it went! : )
