Happy Birthday A.!

Today is A.’s birthday.  He turns 4.  And this morning, as he laid next to NYCity Mama, after having snuck into her bed while she slept, she couldn’t help but stare.  As he laid there, breathing the relaxed breaths of a sleeping child, with no worries or care in the world, she felt an intense love in her heart for her little boy.

She remembered the day she found out she was pregnant with him, how long they had tried to have him.  She thought about how the desire to want to give him and his older brother EVERYTHING led them to leave NYC with the belief that they could afford more by doing so.  She thought about how little he used to be, but how incredibly strong-willed and opinionated, like his Mama, he has always been.

She couldn’t help but kiss him, which caused him to stir.  She wanted to hold him and keep him safe and happy and smiling. Because the truth is, when that little boy smiles it has a way of making her smile too; his big green eyes light up, his dimples just make the whole moment even cuter, and his contagious laugh is enough to make anything bad suddenly go away.

Nowadays, he has less tantrums (though they still happen every now and then), he has an incredible imagination and is a wonderful storyteller.  Oh man, and is he funny.  Destined for movies, comedy to be exact. He’s become a pickier eater, though he remains tall for his age, he is sweet and smart, knows all his shapes, colors and can count to 15.  He says “I Love You” more than Mama recalls ever saying it herself. He’s a hugger, and kisser, and though not as sensitive as his older brother, he is incredibly sweet when he wants to be.

The list can go on and on about this little boy.  But really, as any parent knows and understands the love one has for their child, and that flood of emotions that overcomes them daily, but especially during such milestones as birthdays, you probably already know what she is feeling today.  A mix of happiness and sadness.  Excitement and fear.  Her little baby, now a little boy.  A 4 year old boy.  Who in 2 months will be walking with her to his first day of school.

Happy Birthday A.  We love you!
