Super WHY at CBS Early Show Filming, NYC
Late last month NYCity Mama participated in a behind-the-scenes look of the popular and much loved children’s show, Super WHY. Since then, her boys have grown more and more in love with the show’s characters. Her 3.5 year old, who calls himself Super Why (while her 2.5 year old believes he is Alpha Pig), has been asking not only for the Super Why costume, but also the “flying shoes”. This request was first made about 2.5 weeks ago, and has been a daily mention ever since.
Thus, when Mama received an invitation to be part of the crowd filming at the CBS Early Show, where the special guests would be the Super WHY characters, she couldn’t say no, even if it meant taking on the task of getting up at 5:00AM and managing to get the boys out of the apt and to Fifth Avenue by 7:15AM. She thought it would be a bit of a hassle, however when her and her husband started waking up the boys, all they had to say was, “We’re going to go see Super Why!” and they allowed their parents to easily prepare them to head out. They didn’t even mind the rain that was falling when they stepped out. The 3.5 yo was a chatterbox during the train ride there. ”This is going to be GREAT!”, kept exclaiming her older toddler at moments when he couldn’t contain the excitement within.

They arrived to Fifth Avenue, and started making their 4 block walk past the fabulous shops the world famous avenue is known for, streets often crowded with tourist now wet, deserted, and peaceful.

When they arrive to the filming location for the show there weren’t very many people there, it was raining, and her boys were busting at the seams with excitement. A PR rep for Super WHY approached the kids and offered them some masks and stickers. As she spoke to her 3.5 yo, Mama suddenly overheard him tell her, “I want a Super WHY costume, with the glasses (mask) and flying shoes.” Horrified, Mama walked over to him and said, “Honey, look, she’s got stickers! Aren’t they cool?” and then looked at the PR rep apologetically as she responded hesitantly, “Weeeeeeell, we’ll see.”

They were instructed to line up, and given instruction of “applaud cues” and so forth. They started out with a small crowd, but after a short while a couple of tour busses stopped and dropped off a bunch of people who were also going to join them. At one point a mom (Coast 2 Coast Mom is her blog) approached Mama and asked, “You’re NYCity Mama aren’t you?” Surprised Mama confirmed that she was. “I recognized your son from his hair from pictures in the blog!” she replied with a smile. Ah, her kids are such celebrities! Turned out too, that C2CMom is someone who Mama has also met on twitter. Such a small world even in NYC!).

The kids waited patiently (in general) and were really well-behaved (overall). They waited in the rain, didn’t fuss (too much), didn’t make their parents run after them (too many times), and watched in awe as the cameras would light up and Dave Price did his weather report.

Then something AMAZING happened. One of the PR reps approached Mama and offered her son a costume…a Super WHY! costume!! ”Do you think he’ll be willing to wear it now?” ”Are you kidding? He’ll be thrilled to wear it now!” And with that Mama pulled her son to a corner, who could not…let me repeat that COULD NOT BELIEVE what was happening! He had a frozen smile on his face the entire time Mama put that costume on him (which just fit) and before she could put on his mask he ran off to stand by the Super Why characters who were already greeting the crowd.

To say her boys were having a good time is an understatement. The PR crew passed out toys, the Super WHY characters hung out with the kids for awhile, and her 3.5 yo, left his parents side, and stood, front and center, with Super Why himself, completely speechless, which these days is an impossibility. Mama even got a chance to once again meet and greet the show’s Creator and Executive Producer, Angela C. Santomero and her family, and pose for pictures. ”Viola! The product of your creation.” Mama told her as she pointed out her 3.5 yo, while Ms. Santomero and her husband laughed, seeming pleased with the result.

Everyone was walking on clouds after this event. Her boys who couldn’t believe what had just happened, her 3.5 yo who did not take off the costume till hours and hours later, and Mama and her husband who never could’ve imagined that this one Adventure would make so many of their little boys’ dreams come true! And below is the video!
