Union Square Greenmarket, NY

Yay!  Not only was this a sunny Saturday, but one of the warmest Saturdays in NYC in a while.  NYCity Mama and family had gotten up early to make their way downtown to Union Square, and browse and shop at the local Greenmarket. Mama loves farmers markets.  She fell in love with them while living in Madison, WI.  She loves tasting the fresh cheeses and breads, and smelling the flowers and herbs as she walks by.  It has become one of her favorite things to do on weekends, and she was looking forward to tasting and buying all sort of things.

Not too long after they had gotten off the train, they all realized that the heavy coats they had been wearing were not going to be needed.  The sun was shining bright and warm, the air was fresh, and there was a hint of Spring in the air.  Everyone was in a great mood.  They walked towards the greenmarket, and Mama was immediately hit with the scent of fresh flowers and apple cider.  And there, in front of her, was a beautiful display of fresh apples, of every kind.

They walked around the crowded market and picked out breads, and jams, herbs and vegetables.  They were even able to have an early lunch as they walked snacking off of their purchases. Everything was so fresh, having been trucked in from Upstate New York farms and vendors that same morning.

The market is often less crowded during the weekday, and it is a lot easier to navigate through, especially when bringing kids along. But Mama kinda likes the crowds too.  The weekend crowds are just more fun and not in such a hurry, plus this is almost always when the local musicians will be out entertaining, especially on a nice day.

After the market, they headed to the nearby playground, where the boys got dirty and climbed and socialized, while Mama and Daddy shared an apple cider doughnut and relaxed as they took in some rays talking about how cool this city is, especially on easy going days like these.

cenyc.orgHey everybody, I saw this blog and I just wanted to add some information about a MetroCard Deal at all 50 Greenmarkets throughout NYC. I work for MTA New York City Transit and we partnered with Greenmarkets, who are offering a free reusable bag when you show your MetroCard to the vendor. You have to hurry, though, only the first 50 people to show their MetroCard will receive a bag. For a list of all the Greenmarkets in NYC, visit http://www.cenyc.org and use Trip Planner to get directions there.
